GATEWAY 3DS:

There is three ways this cart works.

4.5 FW - The GATEWAY uses an exploit in the DS Profile to create a 'smash stack'. This crashes the 3DS and causes it to reboot, allowing the GATEWAY's installed profile strings to inject code into the memory and force the DS to boot into the GATEWAY menu.

4.5 - 9.2 FW (3DS & 3DSXL) - Utilising an exploit in the 3DS spider webkit, the Gateway loads an ROP chain using javascript and DOM which allows loading a file from SD card. It then another exploit to inject into the 3DS's memory and run the unsigned code, crashing the 3DS and allowing the GATEWAY to load.

8.0-9.2 FW N3DS & N3DSXL - This requires a copy of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The game is loaded with a custom made save. The save then triggers 3 exploits: gspwn, memchunkhax (to gain kernel control), and firmlaunchhax (to take over the security processor), and boots into the GATEWAY menu.

So the GATEWAY works by running unsigned code on the 3DS. However it has some advantages which i'll go through in a bit.

SKY3DS:

The Sky3DS works by emulating a 3DS cart. Unlike its competitor the GATEWAY, the SKY3DS does not rely on any kernel exploits, and works on every FW from 2.0-9.5 on both OG3DS and N3DS (so far). It works by essentially pretending to be a legitimate cart so that the 3DS will run it.

It is region locked (unless you use regionfree). You have to use your own console Region backups (which you should be using your own backups anyway). There also exists 2 version. rev1 which has a 10 game limit, and rev2 which removes the limit, and it does require the games to be written using a custom Sky3DS tool. But other than that you just plug it in and play, no fuss, no hassle!


Taking account recent cfws, in writers' opinion,SKY3DS is better.

1. when you have a  GW card. You need  SKY3DS to start many loader such like ninjhax, regionFOUR and this Pasta CFW.  Gateway 3ds  plays monodrama on unsigned code as like CIA on below 3ds 9.2  but you need the CUBIC NINJA to launch it. While after all genius CN games is hard to buy since it almost out of stock for a long time. SKY3DS can do CN game card job perfectly it works like genuine game card.  SKY3DS can also be used for playing any 3ds games on any console well.

2. In future some more powerful CFW loader is released but needing another game like Animal Crossing to boot. Do you have to buy another expensive genuine card? If you shop one SKY3DS, you own the whole world.

3. Dsiware, GBAVC only works on Pasta CFW with SKY3DS’s help, Gateway 3ds can do nothing.

What Tricks Gateway had up its Sleeve?

As known to us all, Gateway 3ds has to work on 3ds system version 4.5~4.1, at most featuring with emunand 3ds system 9.0.0.  It is the old history because gateway safely assure that they have tricks up their sleeve.

Today Gateway announced that SUPPORT FOR FIRMWARE 9.0 – 9.2 natively COMING.
It is really a milestone that gateway break 3ds ver 4.5 limit and allowing native system 5.0 user to enjoy 3ds games soon. Of course gateway 3ds will support 2ds and new 3ds console. That reminds us of the amazing SKY3DS flashcard, 1st new 3ds cartridge playing any 3ds games on any 3ds system firmware and 2DS, new 3DS console.

But the approach of gateway seems a little different. Gateway lets us native System Firmware 5.0 or higher, then please update to 9.0.0-20, 9.1.0-20J or 9.2.0-20 and stay on this version. Do not update beyond this version. then coming firmware GW 2.7 or 2.7b break that 3ds version to make it possible that we can play 3ds games.

Which R4i 3DS Card can Work for 2DS?

Nintendo has released its new generation console—2DS. The firmware or system is on v6.0.0-12. Players can not only play DS games, but also play 3DS games with 2DS. Here is the comparison between 2DS, 3DS and 3DS XL.

According to the Gateway 3DS FAQ updates, it is working for Nand savegame for Pokemon and Animal Crossing on Gateway 3DS 2.0 release. Gateway 3DS cards are available on the official reseller Dwtechz.com now.

How to Dump 3DS Roms with R4i Save Dongle for Gateway 3DS?

Gateway 3DS cards have come to us. Can we dump 3DS roms? Yes, we can dump 3DS roms with the tool named R4i Save Dongle, or R4 Save Dongle. R4i Save Dongle was released by R4i-sdhc team. 

However, will it work for Gateway 3DS card? Can we transfer the save file from your 3DS game cart to the Gateway 3DS flashcart? It depends on the hardware of the flashcart. If it is the same as the retail game cart, then it can work.

Pay attention that it is just a test from GBAtemp forum. Please do not have a try before it is confirmed.

Items we need:

2. R4i Save Dongle

3. 3DS console

We can test it as below:

1.       Using the R4i save dongle to backup the save file of a 3DS game

2.       Insert your Gateway 3DS card, the red card, into the R4 save dongle. Check if it can restore the game file

3.       Transfer the rom into the Gateway 3DS

4.       There must be no .save file for rom on the SD card of your 3DS. Otherwise it will overwrite the transferred one.

5.       Run the game with the Gateway 3DS card and check if the save date is still available.

6.       Press Home or Close button to exit the game. And you can check if gateway 3DS card has created the .save file on the SD card of your 3DS.

Gateway 3DS Card Bypass Region Locking and Firmware Limiting

Firmware spoofing and region free have been confirmed by the public release of the firmware V1.1A. It is a good news for us that Gateway 3DS can bypass region locking. It means that even if your 3DS console is on firmware ver. 4.5, you can play 5.1.0 games.

With Gateway 3DS flashcart, your console has to be on fw 4.1 to 4.5. However, you can still play games, which requires a higher firmware. Some players, whose consoles on 5.1, 6.1, 6.2 firmware version, even think about downgrade their 3DS consoles to 4.5.
